The Rideau Canal Skateway will temporarily close at 10 p.m. Thursday due to the current warm weather in Ottawa.
The National Capital Commission (NCC) made the announcement late Thursday afternoon.
“This precautionary measure will preserve the ice surface during the warm spell and should allow us to quickly reopen the Skateway as soon as conditions permit,” the NCC said.
The temperature in Ottawa rose above freezing Thursday, and Friday’s forecast calls for a high of 6 C with periods of rain or drizzle. The average high on Jan. 9 is –6 C.
Rain could continue into Saturday before colder temperatures return Sunday night.
A section of the skateway opened on New Year’s Eve, and the full length opened Monday. A small branch at Patterson Creek is closed to skating this year because of work on a nearby bridge.
