Single Review: Where’s My Phone? By Mitski – A Trippy Return to Form

If you ask the internet about Mitski, they’ll tell you that she’s the patron saint of sad girls. The most popular piece of evidence to support this claim is the hit single ‘ My Love Mine All Mine’ off her seventh album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. The somber track about coming to terms with one’s capacity to love and be loved became her first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The single peaked at No. 26.
The downtrodden cling to her, and for good reason. Mitski is unashamed of the vulnerability that comes with divulging your deepest fears and longings. She’s able to verbalize the ineffable amorphous notions of pain that have plagued us all. However, that melancholic moniker does her a disservice and is a reduction of her artistry. Mitski’s discography explores the full spectrum of human emotion. It’s something that she continues to do with ‘ Where’s My Phone?’ the first single off her upcoming album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me.
The dominant cultural landscape of music lovers is comprised of people who possess a hunger that can only be quelled by nostalgia. Thankfully, with this latest release they’ll be appeased; ‘ Where’s My Phone?’ signals a return to the raucous rock production found in Mitski’s earlier works such as Bury Me at Makeout Creek. In the new song she laments losing her cellular device; in this digital age it’s an apt metaphor for self that works on multiple levels. The song’s final minute sees a dramatic shift in production; Mitski’s voice peels away from the instrumentation. ‘ Where’s My Phone?’ coherencydevolves into trippy disembodied murmurings as she abandons introspective lyricism for non-lexical vocals. It’s a listening experience that can be best described as Alice falling down the rabbit hole.
The sonic hallucinations invoked effectively support the track’s theme of missing a sense of self. It all culminates in a screech as distortion warps and an electric guitar ultimately drowns out Mitski’s vocals. The effect is nothing short of psychedelic and a bit unsettling.
