Chargers plan to hire ex-Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator

Mike McDaniel is heading back out west and back to a role as offensive coordinator.

The Los Angeles Chargers are planning to hire the former Miami Dolphins head coach as their new offensive coordinator, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday evening.

No deal has been signed as McDaniel is still a candidate for head coaching jobs with the Baltimore Ravens and Las Vegas Raiders, Pelissero added. But if McDaniel is an offensive coordinator in 2026, it’s expected to be with the Bolts and quarterback Justin Herbert. Earlier Tuesday, Pelissero reported that McDaniel had withdrawn from consideration in the Cleveland Browns HC search.

McDaniel was an offensive coordinator in 2021 with the San Francisco 49ers prior to becoming the Dolphins head coach from 2022 to his dismissal this offseason. The Chargers also moved on from OC Greg Roman, with McDaniel now his likely successor.

Around the NFL will have more shortly.
