As John Harbaugh arrives, Giants fire longtime front office executive

The Giants will experience big changes in the John Harbaugh era.

One of them emerged Wednesday: Kevin Abrams is out as a member of their front office, according to multiple reports.

The Harbaugh-led Giants firing Abrams is a significant change, given his impact on the franchise since he arrived in East Rutherford as a salary cap analyst in 1999.

Clearly, the Giants will be significantly altering the way they operate under Harbaugh. Abrams’ firing stemmed from “organizational restructuring,” according to NFL Network.

Harbaugh has final say on personnel, so he is now the Giants’ de facto general manager, while Joe Schoen is GM in title only.

Abrams, 54, ascended to assistant general manager under Ernie Accorsi (who hired him) in 2002. Abrams also held that job under GMs Jerry Reese (who won two Super Bowls) and Dave Gettleman.

When Schoen arrived in 2022, Brandon Brown was hired from the Eagles to be his assistant GM. Abrams moved into a new role — senior vice president of football operations and strategy.

And now, he has been fired from that job, a day after Harbaugh’s introductory press conference.

The Giants are the only NFL organization Abrams has worked for.

In his most recent role, Abrams was “responsible for strategic planning related to football operations, data and innovation, managing the salary cap, negotiating player contracts [and] compliance with the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement,” according to his Giants bio.

Abrams also worked “closely with the college scouting and pro personnel departments,” though the arrival of Schoen and Brown resulted in a clear demotion for him from the assistant GM job.
