The Providence Report
Your Georgetown Hoyas return to the road this weekend to face a Providence squad that boasts the most potent offense in the BIG EAST. Under Head Coach Kim English, the Friars are averaging a league-leading 89.7 points per game, ranking 16th nationally in scoring. However, their high-octane attack hasn’t translated to a winning conference record, as they sit at 2-6 in league play and are currently 0-4 in overtime games this season.

The biggest question mark for the Friars is the health of standout guard Jason Edwards. The graduate transfer ranks second in the BIG EAST in scoring (17.2 ppg) but has missed the last three games with a foot injury. In his absence, freshman Stefan Vaaks has exploded onto the scene, becoming the first BIG EAST freshman since 2007 to record four consecutive 20-point games in conference play.
Defensively, Providence has struggled to stop opponents, as evidenced by their recent 105-104 overtime loss to Marquette. However, they remain dangerous on the glass, leading the conference in defensive rebounds per game.
What’s at Stake for Georgetown
This game marks another emotional return for Ed Cooley to the Amica Mutual Pavilion, where the atmosphere is sure to be hostile. Cooley holds a 1-5 career record against his former school and is 1-4 head-to-head against Kim English.

Beyond the storylines, the Hoyas desperately need to find an offensive rhythm after a sluggish 51-point performance against Villanova.
To pull off the upset, Georgetown must contain the perimeter shooting of Vaaks and Jaylin Sellers (15.9 ppg). The Hoyas’ defense, currently ranked 175th in adjusted efficiency when facing D-I teams, will be tested by a Friar offense that ranks 26th in adjusted efficiency.
Offensively, the Hoyas need more production from their backcourt. Malik Mack (13.8 ppg) and KJ Lewis (14.7 ppg) must control the pace and limit turnovers against a Providence team that thrives in transition.
With Providence’s defense ranking 109th in efficiency, there should be opportunities for Georgetown to score if they can execute in the half-court.

The Hoyas should expect the defensive dial to be turned up in the second half, like all prior conference games.
