Montgomery County judge urges residents stay home through Monday due to winter storm

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Officials in Montgomery County urged residents to stay home at least through Monday as a winter storm descends on the area.

County Judge Mark Keough gave ABC13 a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into their operations while monitoring the weather at the county’s emergency operations center.

“We have our outside camera,” Keough said. “It gives us an idea of what’s going on at various places in the county.”

Keough said that is where leaders from law enforcement, EMS, and other county officials will be stationed throughout the weekend.

“We have everybody here. We are engaged. We are focused, and we’re going to get through this,” Keough said.

Keough said preparations for the severe winter weather started days ago.

“We’ve been making arrangements with our first responders, all of our police, our sheriff, our constables, the state police, to be able to be available in the event that this thing gets really serious,” Keough said.

The county judge said they expect over 60 hours of below-freezing temperatures starting Saturday night through Sunday and Monday.

He said those conditions could be extremely dangerous as they create ice on elevated roads.

“Bridges and overpasses are the tough part because you have circulation of air around the bridge going up to it,” Keough said. “You’ve got the ground that retains the heat, but there’s no retention of heat on the bridge.”

When it comes to keeping the lights on, the judge said he’s in contact with all of the county’s electricity providers who are ready to respond to outages if needed.

“I’ll come in here tomorrow morning when I find out if the power has been out,” Keough said. “I’m going to ask how many homes are without power? What are you going to do today and what results am I going to see tonight?”
