The conclusion of one of Netflix’s most popular new programmes establishes the groundwork for a potential second series as viewers question whether it will come back for additional episodes.

All instalments of Free Bert were released just last week but it has swiftly emerged as one of the favoured titles amongst subscribers. At the time of writing it is presently sixth in the UK’s top 10 most viewed series.

This represents quite an accomplishment given it faces competition from crime thrillers His and Hers alongside Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials and the most recent Harlan Coben adaptation Run Away. Devotees have even confessed they’ve consumed the ‘chaotic’ six-part comedy series in remarkable speed.

Numerous viewers claim they’ve succeeded in watching the entire debut series in a single session. It is co-created and stars comedian Bert Kreischer, reports the Mirror.

For those not acquainted, Kreischer is an accomplished comedian with nearly half a dozen stand-up specials also available on Netflix. But is the programme coming back for a Season 2? Here’s what we understand so far.

Will there be a Season 2 of Free Bert?

Netflix has yet to confirm whether or not they’ve approved a second series of Free Bert or if it’s been axed after just one run. Nevertheless, Bert Kreischer’s latest statement might offer fans optimism.

Days following its Netflix launch, the comedian posted a video message to supporters expressing his gratitude for their backing. In his statement, he said: “I just want to take two seconds and thank everyone who tuned in to Free Bert on its premiere night on Netflix. I woke up this morning with a text saying it was trending at number two (in the US) and I was overwhelmed. I can’t tell you how emotional I got in my bed.”

He went on: “I’ve released specials and this is a total different beast. This is acting, producing, my wife helped work on it and I’m out of my comfort zone and a sitcom has always been my great white whale.

“Thank you to the cast who did such a great job. Thank you to the producers, the writers but more importantly thank you to everyone who texted me and DM’d me and shared it on socials. I counted 150 texts and I’ve been overwhelmed with gratitude. And if you like the show share it with someone.”

The reality that Kreischer remains optimistic, and continues urging others to promote the series, indicates that no verdict has been reached by Netflix. Devoted fans understand they are more inclined to commission a second series for a programme that generates discussion, gets shared and maintains its trending status.

Whilst Netflix has yet to reach a conclusion, the first series finale certainly leaves scope to continue the narrative. The closing episode focuses on the Mr and Miss Barklidge ceremony.

Following the prize presentation and Bert’s grand speech, he is ultimately removed by security. Yet, just as he approaches the exit, somebody halts him and offers an introduction.

They state they are Gene Magnussen and they “have a lot to discuss”. It then transitions straight to the closing credits.

Magnussen was naturally the identity of the enigmatic former associate of Bert’s new companions. The breakdown of that relationship remains cloaked in mystery. It suggests any second series could centre on Gene, and disclose what actually transpired.
