Prince of Wales Bridge to close tonight for ‘urgent’ works – impact on drivers

The Prince of Wales Bridge will be closed in one direction tonight (Wednesday, January 21) due to “urgent” electrical works.
Both the Prince of Wales and Severn Bridges require “frequent maintenance” to keep them in “safe and serviceable condition”, according to National Highways.
The government-owned highways agency continued: “Sometimes we need to close a bridge to keep road users and our team safe while we work.
“We understand that these closures cause disruption to road users and local communities, and we’re striving to keep the bridges open as often as we can.
“Our work isn’t always visible.
“We may be carrying out repairs underneath the road surface, or waiting for construction materials to dry or set before continuing our work.”
The Prince of Wales Bridge closure in place tonight
The Prince of Wales Bridge (junction 23 to 22 on the M4) will be closed to eastbound traffic overnight on Wednesday (January 21) between 8pm and 6am.
This latest closure is due to “urgent” electrical works.
The M4 will also be closed westbound overnight between junctions 20 and 22, affecting access to both the Prince of Wales and Severn Bridges.
This closure is a result of two maintenance schemes:
-
Renewing white lines and studs (cats eyes)
-
Loop cutting (laying wire to monitor traffic flow and feed data into traffic systems)
These come after the Prince of Wales Bridge was closed to westbound traffic overnight on Tuesday (January 20) between junctions 21 and 23 (on the M4) due to structure maintenance.
Diversions
The diversion for tonight’s closure on the Prince of Wales Bridge will be via the M48 eastbound, accessed through junction 2 exit and entry slip roads.
Full details for the M4 closure between junctions 20 and 22 can be found on the National Highways website.
Upcoming Severn Bridge closure
A full weekend closure is also scheduled for the Seven Bridge between January 30 and February 2.
