BREAKING: Arlington Public Schools closed Monday, ‘limited’ trash collection to resume

After being closed all last week, Arlington Public Schools are set for at least one more snow day.
APS announced around 4 p.m. Sunday that schools will be closed again on Monday. But relief may be in sight for beleaguered parents.
“We plan to open two-hours late on Tuesday,” APS said in its announcement, below.
The accumulation of ice has made some sidewalks, bus stops, and side streets unsafe. Due to persistent freezing temperatures and unsafe conditions, APS will remain closed on Mon, Feb 2, and we plan to open two-hours late on Tuesday. Some cleared areas have refrozen or been covered again by street plowing.
All 12-month staff should report on time on Monday; telework-eligible staff may work remotely with supervisor approval.
Here are ways the community can help prepare for a safe return on Tuesday:
- Clear Areas: Help clear sidewalks and bus stops in your neighborhood.
- Plan Ahead: Allow extra travel time and plan your route to school.
- Accompany Students: Walk bus riders to stops, use caution, and ensure they are dressed warmly.
- Share Rides: Share rides when possible and look out for pedestrians, as some may be walking in the street due to uncleared sidewalks.
- Be Patient: Bus drivers may need extra time navigating narrow streets. Remember that buses cannot back up.
Thank you to Arlington County and to our custodians and Facilities and Operations staff for their hard work in challenging conditions over the past week. Thank you to the community for your understanding as APS and Arlington County work to address these conditions. We look forward to a safe return to school on Tuesday.
On its website, APS thanked employees who worked throughout the weekend, in frigid conditions, to clear snow- and ice-covered surfaces on school grounds.
“The Facilities and Operations team worked tirelessly this week to remove snow and ice from our sidewalks, parking lots and outdoor areas. We are grateful for their dedication and hard work,” the school system wrote.
Arlington is not the only suburban D.C.-area district set to be closed Monday: Montgomery County schools announced a closure shortly before Arlington.
Trash collection, meanwhile, is set to continue on a “limited” basis on Monday. It will be the first collection in two weeks for Arlington County households with a Monday collection day. Tuesday and Wednesday collection was also skipped last week.
More, below, from Arlington’s Solid Waste Bureau.
Due to post-snow storm conditions, regular Monday residential curbside collection service will operate in a limited capacity on Feb. 2. Crews will ONLY collect trash and recycling carts and fulfill cart service requests. There will be no collection of organics, brush, e-waste or scrap metal. Please have carts placed at the curb by 6:30 a.m. Monday.
If you experience a missed collection, please submit a request online for fastest response.
We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we continue our snow response. Please visit the County website for updates on the status of activities and services. Find more information in the Snow and Ice page.
