New York Knicks guard Miles “Deuce” McBride will undergo surgery Friday for a “core muscle injury,” more commonly known as a sports hernia, and he could be out until the playoffs, league sources tell The Athletic.
McBride has missed the Knicks’ last five games with what the team has been calling “left ankle injury management.” McBride sprained his ankle in December, which forced him to miss three weeks, and New York has cited the injury to explain his recent absence.
He underwent an MRI for the sports hernia on Jan. 29, league sources said.
McBride is in the midst of a career season, averaging a personal best 12.9 points in 28.0 minutes, mostly coming off the bench for the second-place Knicks. He is one of the team’s leading sharpshooters, draining 42 percent of his nearly seven 3-point attempts a game.
Not only is he the backup point guard to All-Star Jalen Brunson, but he also plays alongside Brunson, acting as a spot-up threat on offense and a defensive pest on the other end. Many of New York’s most successful lineups include him.
The news comes on the heels of a related Knicks tidbit: New York agreed just before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline to a trade for New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado, league sources confirmed to The Athletic.
The Knicks were already on the prowl for an extra ballhandler. McBride’s injury pushed the process along even further.
