Austria to set up border terminal at Vienna Airport under EU asylum pact
Austria will set up a border terminal at Vienna Airport as part of implementing the EU Asylum and Migration Pact from June 12th, 2026, according to the Interior Ministry. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner presented the project on February 5th alongside Vienna Airport CEO Günther Ofner and Public Security Director General Franz Ruf.
The ministry said the process will have three steps, with police screening checks first, then the asylum procedure handled by the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum, followed by a return procedure if entry is refused.
People in border procedures are not allowed to enter federal territory and can be held in the transit area for up to 24 weeks, or up to 26 weeks in exceptional cases.
Billa switches to a flat 30 percent discount for near-expiry food
Billa is changing its discount stickers for food items nearing their expiration date, introducing a uniform 30 percent reduction, according to Der Standard. The retailer said it will use only 30 percent “Food is valuable” stickers across Austria.
The company previously used 25 percent or 50 percent discount stickers for items close to expiry. The change was confirmed by Billa, which is part of Germany’s Rewe Group, and by Oberösterreichische Nachrichten.
Billa’s broader discount campaigns have sparked debate in the past, including a switch to digital vouchers for Jö Bonus Club members and a later return to physical stickers.
