A run of just one win in five Premier League matches has left Aston Villa nine points behind leaders Arsenal in the title race and, with those behind closing in, they will be desperate to resume winning ways at home to Brighton.

A 4-3 defeat to Villa at the Amex in December was the start of the drop-off for the Seagulls, who head to the Midlands in need of a positive performance following a sequence of just one victory in 12 top-flight fixtures.

Aston Villa vs Brighton preview

A 1-0 defeat at home to ten-man Brentford followed by Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Bournemouth should have all but ended Aston Villa’s Premier League title dream, but they will be keen to get the show back on the road at home to Brighton.

It has been a tremendous season thus far for Unai Emery’s side, especially given the lack of squad depth at his disposal, but there are signs that fatigue is setting in.

That is no surprise given that they have also won seven of their eight Europa League matches this season and this will already be their tenth fixture in 2026.

Villa had chalked up 11 straight wins at home between the end of September and the start of this year but back-to-back 1-0 league defeats at Villa Park against Everton and Brentford require a response.

Emery should feel this as a good opportunity to do that against a Brighton side whose only win in their last 12 league games came against relegation-bound Burnley.

The Seagulls limped to a 1-0 loss at home to derby rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday, and showed a lack of confidence as they had only two shots on target.

But they should be able to play with more freedom against Aston Villa and Fabian Hurzeler is likely to freshen up his side following such a below-par display with Danny Welbeck and Yankuba Minteh likely to return to the starting side.

Having trailed 2-0 at the Amex in December, Villa turned on the style to record a thrilling 4-3 success and Brighton tend to fare better against opponents who like to attack. There were 30 shots in that south-coast classic, and 17 of those efforts were on target.

The Seagulls were beaten 2-1 at Fulham in their last away league game but they did knock Manchester United out of the FA Cup at Old Trafford in January, having four days earlier pushed Manchester City hard in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad.

There is a sense that Brighton must be better than their 14th place implies and, given Villa are without a clean sheet in six home games, another gung-ho match could be in prospect.

Watkins can get back on scoring trail

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has managed just one goal in his last seven appearances but he enhanced an excellent record against Brighton with his brace in December’s 4-3 win at the Amex.

Watkins has nine goals in ten league meetings against the Seagulls, which includes the last four meetings at Villa Park, and  chances are continuing to fall his way.

Villa can edge out struggling Seagulls

Both teams have scored in five of the last six Premier League meetings between these sides at Villa Park. The Villans have eon on four occasions, and that trend may continue.

Villa edged past Brighton 2-1 at home in May 2023 and this could be a repeat scenario as the Seagulls are out of nick and have already been beaten by that scoreline on recent trips to Arsenal and Fulham.

Both teams to score

Villa edged Brighton in a seven-goal thriller at the Amex in December and both teams have scored in the Seagulls’ last five away games.

Ollie Watkins anytime goalscorer

The Villa sharpshooter has scored ten goals in nine league meetings with Brighton, which includes a first-half brace in the reverse fixture.

Morgan Rogers to commit two or more fouls

Rogers is known best for his creative qualities but he has a fiery streak too and has committed 32 fouls in 25 league appearances, more than any other Villa player.
