Shaun White exclusive on Hirano Ayumu injury – “If anyone can push through, it’s him”

“The G-force is going up the wall”

Hirano said on Tuesday that, “as long as there is one percent chance of getting back to competing, I wanted to have a go”.

And that is a mindset White can completely relate to, even if he knows the pain Hirano will be going through.

“It’s intense,” added White. “You’re traveling at such speeds – maybe 60mph – dropping into a half pipe.

“The walls themselves are 22ft tall. It’s a massive ramp you’re going off. And then you’re flying out of that another 20ft-plus if you’re doing Ayumu-sized airs.

“So the G-force is going up the wall. The pressure you have to use to spring off the wall to get back in, it’s just a force that not many people are used to.

“But that’s the beauty of sports. You just lay it all out there.

“I always tell athletes, ‘If you can come here and just give it your all, you can leave with your head held high’.”
