Former Parkhead skipper Scott Brown has drawn up a three point plan to save Celtic’s title bid and urged the club’s militant supporters to help make it happen.

Brown has called on an increasingly angsty fan base to get off the back of Callum McGregor as the current captain attempts to play through the pain barrier to secure a fifth successive league crown.

He has backed Martin O’Neill to pull off what Brown believes would be one of the greatest top flight triumphs of all time – and urged the veteran boss to consider staying in charge for at least another 12 more months.

And he has pleaded with the club’s ultras to shelf their ongoing civil war against the board while McGregor and O’Neill attempt to close in on a potential Premiership and Scottish Cup double.

Celtic face St Mirren at Hampden in Sunday’s semi final looking to book a place in this season’s end of season showpiece – and remain in a three way fight for title, trailing Hearts by just three points with five games left to play.

And that’s despite the catalogue of turmoil which, among other things, has seen Brendan Rodgers binned, O’Neill brought out of retirement 20 years after leaving the club, Wilfried Nancy hired and then fired in the space of 33 calamitous days, and O’Neill answering a second ‘save our season’ call from principal shareholder Dermot Desmond.

In an exclusive interview with Record Sport Brown said: “It’s not been a perfect season, far from it, but the manager and the players have found a way to keep winning games of football. So it’s about keeping the faith.

“If they go and win this league after all the pressure and all of the criticism of the board, the players and managers coming in and leaving, it will be the best league win ever.

“There are a lot of vultures out there on social media and podcasts who think they know how to run the club better. It’s as if people think Celtic can just go out and spend £20m on a player because the money is in the bank.

“But if you do that and then you don’t make the Champions League then what happens? The club starts going into the red.

“So everyone has to come together because that’s one of the biggest things in football – togetherness. The fans, the players and the board need to come together for what’s left of the season and then some big decisions can be made in the summer on what direction they go in from there.”

Brown is backing Cinderalla Man O’Neill to hang around for one more campaign.

He said: “I would love Martin to stay for another season. Look, it’s obviously hard for Martin – he’s no spring chicken anymore!

“But he still has great enthusiasm for the club and, to be honest, that’s half the battle.”

And he has dismissed suggestions that the manager should take McGregor out of the firing line after it was revealed the skipper is battling against an ongoing injury issue.

Brown said: “I’m telling you now, never write Cal off because he’s the main man and he keeps that club ticking. He keeps the team together on the pitch and he’s the driving force off it.

“His mentality is next to none – he wants to play every game whether he’s injured or not. He’ll fight for the cause for the good of the football club rather than worrying about what’s best for himself.”
