Tuesday closure pushes back WCSD’s last day of school to June 8

Snow expected for Tahoe area ski resorts.
A major winter storm, possibly biggest of season, hits Northern Nevada. Ski resorts are expecting more than a foot of snow.

Tuesday’s snow day for thousands of Washoe County students and staff won’t come free.
In previous years, when Washoe County School District canceled school for snow or smoke, officials said extra instructional minutes built into the daily schedule were enough to cover the loss. That’s no longer the case.
The district said it must make up the instructional time lost with Tuesday’s snow day, the first this school year. All WCSD schools, excluding Incline Village, will end on Monday, June 8 rather than Friday, June 5.
If there are more snow days, the district could run into issues. June 9 is primary election day. On November election days, schools close as voters use many of them as polling locations.
In Incline Village, where the school year runs through June 10, students are scheduled to be out of school on June 9. Incline schools’ contingency days set for June 11, 12 and 15.
