Instead, Gavan Holohan bundled home a 96th-minute equaliser to spark wild celebrations in the away end and force extra time.
With penalties looming, Emmanuel Dieseruvwe forced in a last-gasp winner to send Town through and etch his name into Mariners folklore.

An extraordinary contest on an emotional afternoon produced one of the most remarkable scorelines in Blundell Park history.
Town stormed into a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes through Danny Rose and Abo Eisa, only for Notts to fight back. What followed was a breathless end-to-end spectacle, with both sides trading goals throughout the second half.
Eisa struck twice, Harry Clifton and Harry Wood were also on target, but Notts repeatedly responded – Jodi Jones registering four assists in a chaotic encounter.
Wood’s late leveller ensured the Mariners claimed a share of the spoils in a game that had everything.

A tough evening in front of the Sky Sports cameras saw Town fall to a heavy defeat against a clinical Notts side.
Dan Crowley produced a standout display with two goals, while Alassana Jatta and Jodi Jones also found the net. Harvey Rodgers grabbed a consolation for the Mariners before the break, but hopes of a comeback were ended when Crowley added a fourth just before the hour.

Harry Clifton opened the scoring inside four minutes before defender Harry Davis doubled the lead before half-time. Davis added his second after the break and Wes Thomas rounded off the scoring late on to secure a fourth successive home win.
It was a commanding performance that underlined Town’s strength at Blundell Park during that campaign.
