Mick Schumacher’s IndyCar Debut Ends on Lap One

Two corners into his first IndyCar race, Mick Schumacher finds himself in the pits after contact with Sting Ray Robb and Santino Ferrucci in Sunday’s IndyCar season opener in St. Pete.
Contact between Santino Ferrucci and Robb ended with both cars stuffed in the tire bundle at turn two. Schumacher was unable to react in time to avoid piling in as well, seeming to end his race before it truly began.

Robb was able to race on after the contact, with Ferrucci and Schumacher both out.
Schumacher’s much-anticipated start came after the former F1 driver for Haas and World Endurance Challenge driver for Alpine showed strong pace in preseason testing. Schumacher announced he was leaving the WEC Alpine squad at the end of last season before starting his oval and road course testing for IndyCar, announcing the move to IndyCar withRahal Letterman Lanigan this offseason.

Schumacher’s road in racing has been twisty, as the 2020 F2 champion has struggled to solidify the success expected of him given his last name. In IndyCar, the St. Petersburg Grand Prix, which has never gone caution-free, is known to eat up race cars and drivers. Schumacher will have another chance next week as he races his first oval track race in the Desert Double at Phoenix International Raceway.
