Shelter-in-place ordered in Atikokan, armed individuals on the loose

Police say people should seek shelter immediately while they continue their search.

ATIKOKAN — Rainy River OPP are asking the public in the Atikokan area to shelter in place while they search for two possibly armed individuals at large in the area. 

Police, in a social media post issued a number of safety precautions, depending where people might be. 

Those outside should seek shelter immediately in a secure location. Anyone inside would remain there, lock all doors and windows and close curtains and blinds to avoid drawing attention. 

The public is advised not to approach or engage with the suspects. 

Those people who are driving should proceed directly to their destination and seek shelter indoors. Do not pick up hitchhikers. 

Finally, the public should follow the direction of officers on the scene. 

Anyone not in the area is asked not to travel to the affected area until further notice. 

An increased police presence can be expected. 

If you encounter the suspect(s), do not engage or approach them, and call 9-1-1 immediately.
