It was the longest speech in Oscar history; today, it is strictly timed for a simple reason

He took home the 2025 Oscar for Best Actor for his outstanding performance in The Brutalist, and when he stepped onstage to collect his statuette, Adrien Brody delivered a moment for the ages: the longest acceptance speech in Oscar history, clocking in at five minutes and 40 seconds.

As Brody gave his address – ignoring the Academy’s 45-second limit – social media lit up with criticism, since many viewers prefer these ceremonies when the pacing is tight and the awards move along briskly.

As is customary, Brody opened by thanking the film’s director and his fellow cast and crew for their work in bringing the movie to life. He then spent several minutes reflecting on sensitive issues such as racism, antisemitism, and war. His remarks were warmly received in the room and produced one of the most emotional moments seen at the Oscars in recent years.

Why does the Academy seek short acceptance speeches?

The previous record belonged to actress Greer Garson, who won Best Actress for Mrs. Miniver in 1943. Her speech ran five minutes and 30 seconds, and ultimately prompted the Academy to attempt to impose its 45‑second cap. These are the main reasons why the organization seeks to avoid overly long speeches:

  • Television: Air time is extremely expensive, and while a live event always carries the risk of unexpected delays, the broadcast still needs to follow certain agreed‑upon parameters.
  • Fairness: As noted above, a speech that runs too long can force the rest of the show to speed up, leaving other winners with less room to speak.
  • Showmanship: Keeping a quick, engaging tempo is crucial for holding the audience’s attention and preventing viewers from tuning out.
