Steven Gerrard names club he’d like to see win Premier League – and it may ruffle feathers

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard’s admission about a fellow Premier League club may come as a surprise to the Reds’ fanbase
Steven Gerrard says Newcastle are his number‑two team in the Premier League
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has made a claim about Newcastle United that may catch Reds supporters off guard. In an interview with TNT Sports, Gerrard discussed a wide range of topics, reflecting on his favourite memories at Anfield and the toughest opponents he faced there.
One of the stops he made at Anfield was the away dressing room, where he revealed that Newcastle are his second Premier League team. It’s an admission that may surprise the Reds’ fanbase, especially after last summer’s transfer saga involving Alexander Isak.
“I’m surprised I’m welcome in here, to be honest,” the former captain joked. “It’s quite fitting actually because outside of Liverpool, if I wanted anyone to win the league, it would be Newcastle.

“They’re my number two team in the Premier League. I’ve never, ever said that [before], but there you go. That’s live for you.”
Gerrard’s comments may ruffle a few feathers amongst the Reds’ supporters following the transfer saga between Liverpool and Newcastle last summer.
Isak’s future was heavily speculated on at the end of last season, and he ultimately pushed for a move to the Premier League champions.
The saga was anything but straightforward and quickly turned toxic. Isak was initially left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia, and Liverpool’s £110million bid was rejected soon after.
The Swede had informed the club he wanted to leave, leading to him training alone and missing Newcastle’s league opener against Aston Villa. He then released a bombshell statement, declaring that ‘promises have been broken’ and ‘trust has been lost’ between player and club.
Newcastle were said to be open to his departure and began exploring the terms of a potential sale, namely bringing in two replacements and securing an acceptable fee, with Liverpool in active negotiations. After months of speculation and stalled negotiations, Isak completed a record-breaking £125m move to Liverpool on transfer deadline day (September 2), becoming the most expensive signing in Anfield’s history.

However, the club are yet to see the player they paid huge money for, with the Swede struggling with injuries since arriving on Merseyside. The 26‑year‑old fractured his tibia in December after a tackle from Spurs’ Micky van de Ven, necessitating surgery for an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture.
Taking to Instagram at the time, Isak shared: “Gutted to be out for a while. Time to recover and support from the sideline. I will work hard to be back as soon as I possibly can.
“Thank you all reds and everyone else for the kind messages, it does not go unnoticed.”

He may be close to making his comeback, having been spotted training individually ahead of their Champions League second‑leg showdown with Galatasaray, where Arne Slot’s side trail 1-0.
