Aston Villa progressed to the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday but they have slipped to three successive Premier League defeats which has left a top-four finish in jeopardy.

They face a tricky test against West Ham, who have rallied in the last few weeks and will be confident they can improve their chances of avoiding the dreaded drop.

Aston Villa vs West Ham preview

While Aston Villa manager Unai Emery will be delighted to see his team in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, there will be concern that their Premier League campaign is petering out.

It was only a couple of months ago that they were being talked about as potential champions, but now they are clinging on to fourth spot and may not do enough in their remaining games to claim a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Thursday’s home win over Lille will have brightened the mood but Villa Park has not been the fortress in recent weeks that we have grown used to over the last couple of seasons.

They have won just one of their last five league games on their own patch and that came courtesy of a late own goal against Brighton, so a run of consecutive defeats to Wolves, Chelsea and Manchester United needs to end quickly.

However, West Ham provide a tricky test. The Hammers have shown great signs of life in the last few weeks and the relegation-threatened EastEnders have lost just once in their last six outings.

That defeat came at Liverpool and they have also earned draws against the Manchester clubs in that run, so they look decent value to ensure Villa don’t snap out of their losing run.
