Here’s a great new tune from youthful banjo prodigy Steve Martin and the even more youthful banjo prodigy Alison Brown. That’s two banjos – so you know that we’re deep into the real Americana – we know that so many of y’all feel that it ain’t Americana if it ain’t got a banjo. New Cluck Old Hen is a new take on a classic Appalachian song and is featured on Brown and Martin’s debut collaborative album Safe, Sensible and Sane out now via Compass Records.
Steve tells it that “I always loved the classic American mountain tune Cluck Old Hen. Its only problem was it was about chickens. So one day I decided to see if I could give it a new lyric spin. Alison agreed and arranged it with ’power/bluegrass/fusion.’ Whatever that is” whilst Alison adds “Once I read Steve’s lyrics I knew Della Mae would be perfect for the song. And they totally laid down the law, bringing the perfect combination of bluegrass drive and femme attitude to the track.”
Eagle-eyed viewers may spot Tony Trischka in the audience. For the non-eagle eyed we can confirm for you that he is there. At around 3minutes and 22 seconds. Yup, that guy.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan’s music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That’s not much to ask, is it?
