Hull City owner Acun Ilicali says the club had little alternative but to raise membership prices ahead of next season, after confirming there would be an increase from July 1.

Prices start from £33 per month for an adult, which is an increase of £3 on the current prices fans are paying, while the club will have three different membership categories moving forward – adult, concession and juniors.

Children aged between two and 15 will pay £8 per month, or £96 for the year, with City providing one of the best value ticket prices in the Championship and acknowledging youngsters are the future – that works out at just over £4 per Championship game.

With seven games left, and Sergej Jakirovic’s side firmly in the promotion mix, fans could yet be paying to watch Premier League football. Should City go on and win promotion over the next few weeks, then prices would not increase.

If City remain in the Championship, adult prices work out at £17.21 over 23 home games, while that would rise to £20.84 with 19 home matches should they go up to the top flight.

The Tigers are also keen to promote the work they do for members, whether that be signing sessions, holidays to Turkey, bowling events or cinema trips, which they say adds increased value.

“Thank you for the fantastic support you have given us once again this season. The last 12 months have proven to me that Hull City really is a family, and together we have found strength in adversity. Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, I am incredibly proud of our football club,” the Turkish owner said.

“Since coming to the club four years ago, we have worked hard to keep pricing as low as possible, and it has been a great source of pride for me to see our crowds consistently grow. I have been particularly happy to see how many new, young Tigers fans have joined our family in that time.

“But now, with the likelihood of the Championship following the same path as the Premier League in terms of spending rules, and with the introduction of a new independent regulator to help push British football towards a more sustainable future, we as a club need to act in a prudent manner to ensure we can remain as competitive as possible, whatever league we find ourselves in next season.

“We don’t ask our fans to spend more lightly, this decision is one borne out of necessity and I would like to make it clear that every penny you spend with the club goes directly into ensuring we put together the best squad we possibly can, and that will always be the case for as long as I am responsible for this great club.

“As an owner, there are imposed limits on how much I can financially support our club, so in order to have a competitive squad, we must look at all ways we can increase our revenue. Whilst our pricing will now be in line with Championship averages, with your support, we hope to have one of the best teams.”
