Threat of more oceanfront homes collapsing closes portion of Outer Banks beach

Cape Hatteras National Seashore has announced the closure of some beaches due to the increased risk of collapse for one or more threatened oceanfront homes in Buxton and Rodanthe.
Officials are urging all visitors to be cautious through Saturday, April 11, on east-facing beaches due to the threat of coastal erosion and its effects on those buildings.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore said Tuesday that the entire beach in front of the village of Buxton was closed due to the threat to oceanfront structures and in or near the ocean.
“The proximity of these structures to seashore lands poses a serious risk to visitors walking along the beach or wading in the surf,” Cape Hatteras wrote on its Facebook page.
A stretch of beach is also closed from the south end of Buxton extending to just north of off-road vehicle ramp 43.
Since 2020, 31 houses have fallen into the ocean at Cape Hatteras.
