Veteran actor Harrison Ford has reflected on his career, saying he always saw himself as a character actor rather than a traditional leading man, despite becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest box office stars.
Speaking on Awards Chatter, a podcast by The Hollywood Reporter, Ford spoke about his preference for complex, grounded roles over conventional hero-driven parts. “I always wanted to be a character actor. I had never thought that I would be a leading man. That doesn’t make any sense. I don’t look like a leading man, it just wasn’t in the cards for me,” he said.
The 83-year-old actor pointed to films such as Witness (1985) and The Mosquito Coast (1986) as turning points, where he was able to play leading roles that did not rely on the typical “leading man” mould.
Explaining the distinction, Ford said, “When the part can be described as a ‘leading man,’ you have certain responsibilities. You have to make the audience happy to be with you. You usually end up supplying an easy answer to a difficult dilemma that’s been driving the film, and then you end up with a soft solution, as it were.”
He also highlighted performances in films such as 42 (2013) and K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) among his most satisfying. “I really loved both of those films, actually. I loved acting and not being a leading man,” he said.
