Director Takashi Yamazaki Unveils ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ First Look

Director Takashi Yamazaki, who won an Oscar in 2023 for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One, took the stage at CinemaCon to introduce his next film, Godzilla Minus Zero.
“The journey from Minus to Zero will not be an easy one,” he told the annual confab of exhibitors. “Right now, we are pouring all of our technology into this new story of desperation and hope to theaters around the world.”
In Minus One, post-war Japan was flattened by Godzilla’s attacks. People struggled to rise again. “But in this new film, an even deeper desperation will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family,” he said.
It also doesn’t look great for New York City. The tail end of the first look clip shows the monster right behind the Statue Of Liberty — leading to audible gasps from the audience in the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The films opens Stateside. The early footage shows the giant lizard in the water and out, mobbed streets, scientists in labs and a grieving mother, interspersed with shots of director and cast on set.
GKids, which is now owned by Toho, is planning a wide theatrical release across North America beginning Nov. 6. Godzilla Minus One opened to $11.4M Stateside and went on to make north of $57 million at the domestic B.O. A remastered black-and-white version received a one-week play in late January 2024 in the states after playing Japan earlier that month.
