‘What a joke’: Debris-ridden property turns heads in the Sault

The city’s chief building official says the Wellington Street West property was recently reviewed by bylaw enforcement

A debris-strewn property in the Steelton neighbourhood has been causing a stir on social media.

Photos of a yard on Wellington Street West recently surfaced on the Facebook group Keeping the Soo Safe Explicit, which raised concerns from commenters about property standards in the city.

“Starting to wonder why I even bother paying taxes,” said an anonymous poster who shared the photos yesterday.

“This city [is] quite literally a dump. What a joke.”

Freddie Pozzebon, chief building official at the City of Sault Ste. Marie, confirmed that the condition of the property was recently reviewed by bylaw enforcement staff.

Pozzebon said the condition of the yard would generally warrant an Order to Comply being issued to the property owner, in accordance with a section of the city’s property standards bylaw that deals with yard maintenance.

These types of bylaw violations are required to be in compliance within 10 days of a bylaw enforcement officer’s inspection date, according to Pozzebon.

If the violations are not remedied within the time specified in the order, the municipality may take action to correct them at the expense of the owner — with an administrative fee tacked on, according to an Order to Comply document provided by the city.

All fees incurred to remedy the violation will then be added to the tax roll for the property.

Documents obtained by SooToday show the property was purchased for $130,000 by an individual listed as Dale Marshall in October 2021.

Attempts to track down the property owner were unsuccessful.
