Jack Rudoni contemplates England prospects amid USA frustrations

Jack Rudoni is hoping that stepping up to the Premier League will help his international ambitions, admitting that he now has half an eye on playing for England after continuing frustrations in trying to qualify for the USA.

The Coventry City star’s grandfather is American, currently living in Monterey, California, and his dad was born there. Rudoni has tried to apply for a US passport but red tape stipulates that because his dad hasn’t lived there for the last five years then he doesn’t qualify.

He has previously been contacted by the US national team but all attempts to get the required documentation have failed, leaving the 24-year-old to contemplate the prospect of pushing for honours with his home country.

His chances of gaining recognition with the Three Lions will be vastly improved next season if he can establish himself in the Premier League following the Sky Blues’ promotion, which will be mathematically confirmed with one more point.

Asked if there has been any progress with his attempts to qualify for the US, the Carshalton-born attacking midfielder said: “No, I don’t know if there’s a way if they hear or see this and want to try and make something happen. I don’t know if there is a way to get me a passport.

“I know I have my grandad who is fully American, my dad has an American passport, birth certificate, but he hasn’t lived there for four or five years, so I don’t know if that qualifies.

“You’d think I’d have enough American in me to qualify when my grandad’s lived there all his life, but I don’t know the rules. I don’t know if Trump’s doing anything as well, if that changes stuff but, yeah, I don’t know if someone out there is able to something.

“We have tried and it’s not worked. Maybe there’s a way to make it happen, maybe there’s not.”

He added: “I’m focussed on my club football right now. I’ve obviously got American in me. I’m English, so, you know, going to a Premier League I’d love to break into the England squad as well.”
