Trump Admits His Doordash Stunt Was ‘Tacky’

On Monday, Trump accepted a McDonald’s delivery from a DoorDash driver outside the Oval Office in a gimmicky attempt to plug his “no tax on tips” policy. He proceeded to have a deeply awkward interaction with the driver, a woman wearing a “DoorDash Grandma” T-shirt who’s actually been touting the legislation in congressional hearings for months. DoorDash denied that the woman was a plant, but Trump did crack a “this doesn’t look staged, does it?” joke during the handoff. Well, staged or not, it kind of sounds like he’s regretting the whole schtick.

Speaking about the policy at a Tax Day roundtable in Las Vegas on Thursday, Trump admitted the photo op might have been a bit tacky. “Earlier this week at the White House, I met a wonderful woman named Sharon Simmons, a grandmother driving DoorDash to help support her husband’s cancer treatment,” he told reporters. “He’s got serious cancer — he’s going to be okay, I think.” Trump then took a moment to ponder aloud about the stunt’s lack of elegance. “It was a little bit of a — you know, I mean, to be honest, a little tacky,” he said, before attempting to pin the entire thing on his staff. “You know, they come up with these crazy ideas,” he said.

However, as his choice in White House décor has shown, Trump isn’t afraid of being tacky, so he’s standing ten toes down behind staging a McDonald’s delivery. “We do these things in politics; they’re a little embarrassing,” he added. “But we do them and you win by landslides.” Points for self-awareness, I guess?
