Missing Boston hiker found dead on White Mountains trail

A missing hiker from West Roxbury was found dead Tuesday on a trail on Franconia Notch in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, officials said Wednesday.
Six other hikers from Massachusetts had been rescued from the White Mountains in the past week and officials had warned people to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Kent Wood, 61, had driven to the Lafayette Campground in Lincoln, N.H., and set off for a weekend hiking trip on Saturday “with warm temperatures and clear skies,” according to officials.
His family became concerned after not hearing from him for two days and reported him missing.
“While gathering information on where to search, rescuers learned that Kent was prepared for warmer conditions and not the 3-5 inches of snow that had fallen between Sunday and Monday in the Franconia Notch area,” the state’s Fish and Game department posted on social media.

Search teams found the man’s body at 7:31 p.m. Tuesday on a remote section of the Kinsman Pond Trail in Lincoln, more than five miles from his vehicle, officials said.
“Hikers are reminded that spring conditions in the mountains can change quickly and preparation is an important part of your trip,” officials said Tuesday while announcing an earlier rescue mission. “Having the 10 essentials which includes a map, can greatly improve the outcome of your trip to the mountains.”
On Monday, a North Reading man was rescued from a trail after getting caught in a snowstorm. Two teenagers from Plymouth were rescued from the summit of Mount Washington on Saturday night after cold temperatures and high winds caused them to take shelter outside a park building.
On Friday, rescuers guided three Haverhill women down a Franconia Notch trail after they were caught after nightfall without lights.
