Apple TV’s twisted new comedy hailed as ‘unlike anything else on TV’

Widow’s Bay is a new Apple TV comedy from Parks and Recreation’s Katie Dippold that critics seem to love. Here’s what the first reviews say.

Widow’s Bay arrives April 29 as another strong addition to Apple TV

Most TV shows and movies fit neatly into a genre box—as a comedy, thriller, drama, and so on. And while there’s always some overlap between genres, it can be very difficult to make a full-on genre mashup work.

Apple calls its new show Widow’s Bay a “genre-bending” series that combines elements of comedy, horror, thriller, and character drama all into one.

It shouldn’t work. But based on early reviews, it sounds like it absolutely does.

Here are some excerpts from the first reviews:

• RogerEbert.com: “It is truly unlike anything else on TV, a wild swing of tonal shifts that works because it commits so fully to both halves of the equation.”
• The A.V. Club: “With its diverse elements coming together like lightning in a bottle, Widow’s Bay is a destination well worth visiting.”
• Decider: “a hauntingly good horror comedy that achieves a masterful blend of nail-biting terror and deliciously dark humor.”

Widow’s Bay premieres Wednesday, April 29 with two episodes, followed by weekly releases through June 17, and a special two-episode drop on May 27.

The series stars Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey.

It takes unique skill to pull together such an odd mix of genres, but creator and showrunner Katie Dippold, director Hiro Murai, and the rest of the creative team and cast clearly have brought the goods.
