Bruins’ McAvoy offered in-person hearing for slashing Sabres’ Benson

The date and time of the hearing are to be determined.

McAvoy issued the slash after a slew foot from Benson with 1:31 remaining in the game, which sent the Bruins defenceman sliding into the boards.

The American blue-liner then chased Benson down and swung his stick across the Sabre’s chest. McAvoy was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the play.

Buffalo ultimately won 4-1, securing its first playoff series win since 2007.

Since the NHL offered McAvoy an in-person hearing, he could face a suspension of six or more games. He would begin serving that suspension at the start of the 2026-27 regular season.

In Boston’s six-game series loss, McAvoy averaged 25:37 of ice time per contest while recording two assists and a minus-6 rating.

During the regular season, the 28-year-old had 11 goals and 61 points in 69 games.
