Spirit pilot loses retirement flight by one day, Southwest delivers unforgettable sendoff

There’s a video shared by Southwest Airlines that’s quickly gaining attention thanks to the incredible effort employees made to turn a difficult situation into something special.

Capt. Jon Jackson was supposed to operate his final flight with Spirit Airlines today. Instead, after the airline abruptly shut down, he ended up traveling home as a passenger on a Southwest flight, sitting in the back alongside his son Chris, who works as a Southwest first officer.

During the flight, Chris mentioned to the pilots that it should have been his father’s retirement trip. That set things in motion. The crew coordinated with Dylan, a Southwest dispatcher, and arranged a surprise once they landed in Baltimore. Fire and rescue crews welcomed the aircraft with a traditional water cannon salute and a ground team was waiting at the gate with cheers and a bottle of champagne.

As he stepped off the jet bridge, a gate agent announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Jon Jackson,” before handing him the champagne. Workers and passengers applauded as he responded, “Very overwhelming. I can’t thank you all enough. As Spirit goes down, this is a sad day, and you guys made it incredible. Thank you so much.”

Moments like this highlight the respect and camaraderie within aviation. This was about recognizing a fellow pilot and giving him the sendoff he deserved. Congratulations to Capt. Jackson and Southwest Airlines for making his retirement special.

I’ve experienced retirement flights before. Last summer, I flew from Chicago to Naples, Italy on a captain’s final trip. At the gate, there were balloons and a cake, and onboard there were decorations along with the pilot’s family since it was his last flight before retiring at 65. As we pushed back, the Chicago Fire Department performed a water-cannon salute and passengers applauded. It was clearly a proud moment for everyone involved. What Southwest did here for a pilot from another airline feels even more meaningful given the circumstances.

That same sentiment shows up in the thousands of comments on Southwest’s Instagram and Facebook posts. Here are a few:

Rebecca Jean: Flight Attendant here… definitely not crying. Probably just got some salt from these pretzels in my eye.

Danny O’Connor: This is the America we always knew. There is no rhetoric, no left or right divide, no divisiveness. This is what Americans actually look like and its SO good to see us caring for each other in real time. More of this please! And thank you Southwest for showing love to the Spirit family on a very difficult day. This generous act gives me hope for our country and I mean it. ❤ ❤ ❤

Chica Rica: That last part made me tear up so much. Retiring is bittersweet and the fact he had to manage the feelings that come with that along with Spirit ending must have been so tough. Southwest Airlines you really came through for him and showed that regardless of where aviation industry folks work, you’re all still family 🥰

@tomperkinscountry: I flew with Jon for years at DHL Airways on the DC-8 and we’ve stayed friends ever since. You all knocked this out of the park. So professional and above and beyond. Thank you for doing this for him and his son. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

@ashonadash: This says so much. No matter the airline, there is still a lot of respect. Congrats on your retirement 👏🏽
