Roster Move: Seattle Mariners’ bullpen down leverage arm

The Seattle Mariners’ bullpen is already missing some key names due to injuries. Now they’re down another leverage arm for another reason.

Baseball America rankings: Two Seattle Mariners prospects in top 10

Left-hander José Ferrer has been placed on the paternity list ahead of Monday’s series opener in Houston against the AL West rival Astros. Taking Ferrer’s place on Seattle’s active roster is right-hander Domingo González, who has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

The Mariners currently are missing setup men Matt Brash and Gabe Speier, who each have ended up on the 15-day injured list this month. The right-handed Brash has lat inflammation, while the left-handed Speier is dealing with shoulder inflammation.

Right-hander Carlos Vargas is also on the Mariners’ 60-day IL with a lat injury.

The 26-year-old Ferrer is off to a good start with the Mariners after coming to Seattle in an offseason trade from the Washington Nationals. He has a 1.80 ERA (four earned runs in 20 innings) with 16 strikeouts, three walks, four holds and two saves. He’s made 21 appearances, which is tied for the second most in MLB this season.

Players are allowed to stay on the paternity list in MLB for three days.

González, also 26, was a waiver claim late last season from the Atlanta Braves. The Dominican Republic native has a 1.80 ERA (three earned runs in 15 innings) with 14 strikeouts to two walks in 12 appearances for Tacoma. González would be making his MLB debut when called upon out of Seattle’s bullpen for the first time.

The Mariners are in Houston for four games through Thursday. Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports of Monday’s 5:10 p.m. series opener will begin at 4 p.m. with the pregame show.
