Football Extra’s Dream Signings: Coventry City

It’ll be no surprise to anyone to see Coventry City named among the favourites for the drop next season whenever the odds come out. The scale of the job facing Frank Lampard is significant, given their lack of resources compared to many of their Premier League rivals and a dearth of experience within the existing squad.
However, both Sunderland and Leeds have shown that with a little ambition and smart recruitment, you can thrive, not just survive, in the top flight.
First on my shopping list would be a player with some experience of the league, a leader in the heart of midfield to set the standards and be a marquee name to show Coventry’s intent. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg would be an ideal recruit.
As skipper for both club and country, perhaps he might not seem the most attainable target. But I bet not many Sunderland fans thought they could attract a Granit Xhaka, either. The Premier League is the biggest show in town, the place where all the top players want to play.
Although he’s turning 31 this summer, he’s still in elite condition. He played the most minutes of any Marseille player in 2025-26, and had the second-most touches of the ball in Ligue 1 behind Vitinha. He’d be invaluable.
