Power restored after outages hit Montreal due to gas leak and small fire; some still waiting

Two separate electrical outages left thousands of customers without power Tuesday in several areas of Montreal, for hours, but most have since been reconnected. A gas leak in Westmount and then a small fire were to blame.
The first outage affected approximately 11,500 Hydro-Québec customers in downtown Montreal, Westmount, and the Sud-Ouest borough – and it started around 10:40 a.m. when firefighters were dispatched to Alexis Nihon for the leak.
Montreal police and Énergir were on-hand to assist in the operation and power was cut for safety reasons.
Hydro‑Québec community relations advisor Chloé Masson told CityNews that power was expected to be restored by 7:30 p.m., although she warned that estimate could change. As of the latest updates, all customers in Westmount have now had their power fully restored.

Crews respond to equipment failures in Montreal’s East end
The second outage struck Montreal’s east end, impacting parts of Anjou, Saint‑Léonard, Montreal North, and neighbourhoods near Galeries d’Anjou.
Masson said this outage stemmed from two separate equipment failures: one of them affected just over 180 customers, with service initially expected to return by 9 p.m., while the other affected just over 4,000 customers, with restoration expected around 7 p.m.
She added that those restoration times might shift as crews continued to analyze the damage.
Later in the evening, at 6:40 p.m., Hydro‑Québec confirmed that the 4,000 customers in the larger outage had been reconnected. However, just over 160 customers remained without power, and service for them was still expected by 9 p.m.
As of around 9:30 p.m., Masson confirmed that crews would need to replant a pole and rebuild part of the network, pushing back the time that the 160 remaining customers would be without power until roughly 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
