Man who killed 6 Wisconsin hunters in 2004 dies while serving life sentences

(WLUK) — Chai Vang, the man who was sentenced to six life sentences for shooting eight hunters, killing six, in Sawyer County in 2004, has died, according to state records.

Vang, 57, is listed as “deceased” as of Wednesday.

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections told FOX 11 that Vang, who was being housed at the Oshkosh Correctional Institution, died at a hospital.

“Federal health privacy laws prevent the department from disclosing additional information,” the DOC wrote.

The hunters had confronted Vang for trespassing. Vang said the shootings were in self-defense after the hunters used racial slurs and shot at him. The incident later became known as the “Tree Stand Murders.”
