Why Wrexham fans may never see three-time promotion winner play for their club again

The ever-changing nature of Wrexham AFC has forced several club legends out the door, and another previously key star may struggle to play for the club again.

Wrexham’s rise under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac has been nothing short of remarkable.

They are the first team in history to win three promotions in a row when starting in the fifth tier or higher.

But this rapid rise, as Shaun Harvey predicted, means the turnover of players at Wrexham has been huge.

Just this summer alone, we saw Paul Mullin, who has scored 110 goals for the Dragons, leaving on a season-long loan after losing his place in the second half of last season.

Ollie Palmer is another club icon who departed this year after having his Wrexham contract terminated.

Said exits mean there is now less than a handful of three-time promotion winners left at the club, one of whom might find it difficult to get another game under Phil Parkinson.

Why Andy Cannon may never play for Wrexham again

Andy Cannon joined Wrexham in 2022 after helping Stockport County win National League promotion the season prior.

The midfielder quickly cemented himself as a key figure at the base of Parkinson’s midfield.

However, Cannon suffered a long-term injury in February 2025 and remains out of action to this day.

Wrexham have since won another promotion and added three new midfielders to their ranks – Ben Sheaf, Lewis O’Brien and George Thomason.

The influx of new talent in the most recent window left the Dragons with too many players, and several, including Cannon, were left out of Wrexham’s Championship squad for the first half of 2025/26.

All unregistered players can play league football during the January transfer window before Parkinson submits his squad for the final few months of the season.

However, it’s hard to see Cannon making the cut come February 2025. Ollie Rathbone is returning for Wrexham soon and will take the only free space left in the squad this year.

That means there will be no room for Cannon, Danny Ward and Jay Rodriguez.

Of course, Parkinson could opt to remove someone from the squad. But in reality, it seems incredibly likely that it will be Ward, who started 2025/26 as the number-one goalkeeper before his injury, who gets brought back into the side.

Moreover, while a busy window isn’t expected, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Wrexham make a couple more signings in January.

That would inflate their squad even more and decrease the chances of Cannon or Rodriguez returning.

When does Andy Cannon’s Wrexham contract expire?

Cannon has played 86 games, scored 12 goals and provided six assists during his time in North Wales.

However, just like Mullin, Palmer and many more, Wrexham’s rapid rise means, even when he returns from injury, his future in the team is heavily in doubt.

Cannon’s current contract is due to expire on June 30, 2026, though there is an option to extend that by a further year.

Should he leave, Max Cleworth and Elliot Lee will be the only regular features still at the club from their National League promotion.
