Viktor Hovland outduels Scottie Scheffler in Monday playoff, wins Travelers Championship

Viktor Hovland would not be denied in a tournament that had the makings of an old fashioned boxing match, defeating Scottie Scheffler in a playoff to win the Travelers Championship.

It’s Hovland’s eighth victory on Tour and first since the 2025 Valspar Championship.

Both players were square at 21-under entering Monday morning’s playoff. Hovland converted his birdie opportunity, putting the pressure on the world No. 1, who matched the Norwegian with the flatstick all tournament.

Only this time, that wasn’t the case.

Scheffler’s four-footer rolled just left, and Viktor Hovland returned to the winner’s circle in resounding fashion.

“I knew I had to bring in my best to have a chance to beat him [Scheffler], and he certainly brought it out of me. I couldn’t be happier,” Hovland said. “Obviously, I know how good I can get. I keep pushing myself and I keep wanting to get better.”

The Norwegian moves his playoff record to 2-0 and becomes the first international player to win the Travelers Championship since Russell Knox in 2016.

What unfolded at TPC River Highlands was nothing short of a heavyweight bout between two of golf’s purest strikers. Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland traded punches from the opening tee on Sunday and battled through the driving rain before officials suspended play late on the back nine.

Both players continued to fight tooth-and-nail as the sun set over Cromwell, Connecticut, exchanging leads as much as seven times during the final round. When the sun shined Monday morning, it was Hovland, backed by an armada of Norwegian fans, standing tall once again.

Hovland ‘couldn’t be happier’ after Travelers win

Viktor Hovland describes his emotions after defeating Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at the Travelers Championship, which marks his eighth career PGA Tour win.

This is Scheffler’s fourth runner-up finish since opening his season with a win at The American Express.

“I hit it on my line. I just think it was a little bit firm,” Scheffler said. “It was one of those putts you kind of had to make. So that’s a bit disappointing, especially with the putts I made last night.”

Though Hovland and Scheffler were the story, the leaderboard could not have been more built for a signature event. Collin Morikawa comes home third at 20-under after tying his career-low (61) in the final round. Matt Fitzpatrick followed suit in solo fourth, with U.S. Open Champion Wyndham Clark and Akshay Bhatia rounding out the Top Five.
