Tree services see surge in calls as residents assess storm damage

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Cleanup is underway on both sides of the river after powerful storms dropped golfball-size hail and strong winds that uprooted trees and scattered branches across several communities.

City officials say the response depends on the extent of the damage.

For minor damage, such as small limbs and branches, residents are asked to use their city’s brush pickup program. Branches should be placed at the curb, where crews will collect them on recycling day.

For larger problems, including big limbs hanging over homes or trees tangled in power lines, professionals recommend hiring a tree service.

“We’ve already been getting calls. People want us to come out, take a look and see if we can clean up the mess,” said Nick Krebsbach, with KP Tree Services in Dilworth.

Krebsbach and his business partner, JR Prestegord, cover roughly a 100-mile radius around the metro area. They assess the damage on site and provide estimates.

“We can give a couple different options, if the homeowner wants the whole tree removed or just trimmed up. It really just depends on the damage,” Krebsbach said.

Costs vary based on the size of the tree, how difficult it is to access and whether the crew hauls away debris or grinds the stump.

For residents considering do-it-yourself cleanup, Krebsbach urges caution.

“Keep an eye out for funny colored leaves or branches pointing down,” he said. “It’s important to watch for anything still hanging above that could come down later.”

Cities are asking residents who haul their own storm debris to take it to the community compost site instead of placing it in the garbage.

Officials also are reminding residents to report damage to park trees or boulevard trees along city streets to their local forestry department so crews can add them to their cleanup list.
