LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – A Webb County jury convicted former Gonzalez Middle School teacher Adriana Rullan on all three counts in a child sexual abuse case July 1, and a judge sentenced her to 33 years in prison.
Judge Becky Palomo of the 341st District Court read the sentence aloud in open court.
“The verdict of the jury has been entered, and I hereby sentence you for the offensive continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 years old felony one count one, to 33 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice,” Palomo said.
Rullan received 33 years for continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, 13 years for indecency with a child, and 10 years for an improper relationship between an educator and student. The sentences run concurrently, bringing her total prison term to 33 years. The jury also assessed $20,000 in fines.
Rullan was taken into custody after sentencing and ordered to begin serving her time in the Texas prison system.
Prosecutors said the victim was 13 when the abuse occurred. In an impact statement to the court, the victim said he continues to struggle with depression and anxiety and described moments where he felt hopeless and did not want to live.
His mother spoke next, telling the court she believes Rullan manipulated her son and that the abuse triggered his depression and anxiety.
“I almost lost my son because of you,” the victim’s mother said. “He was just a 13-year-old boy. You changed him completely.”
Rullan was arrested in December 2023, pleaded not guilty and was convicted after two days of testimony.
Before sentencing, prosecutors told jurors the case represented a serious betrayal of trust and asked for a lengthy prison term. Rullan’s attorney asked for less time, saying she deserved a chance to get help and turn her life around.
