Win or lose in the Wimbledon quarterfinals today, German tennis player Jan-Lennard Struff has already made history. At 36, he became the oldest man in the Open Era to reach his first major quarterfinal.
“It’s just incredible, I would say,” Struff, nicknamed “Struffi,” said after his match, according to ATPTour.com. “Thirty-six years old… Fourth round [for the] first time. Quarter-finals of a Grand Slam [for the] first time. You should never give up.” He has a tough path to his first semifinal: He faces defending champion Jannik Sinner, who has won all three of their past meetings.
Cheering him on from Germany will be his wife, Madeleine Struff, who had to return home after his first-round match. “My wife was there until Wednesday and saw the first match. When I had my second, she had to get on the plane at the same time,” he said. Jan-Lennard added, “The children stayed home, they have school and we have compulsory education in Germany. That’s why it’s difficult to come here…We have a kindergarten party tomorrow. Everything is fine as it is.
