Heavy traffic is building up to junctions 21 and 20 on the M6

Drivers are facing huge delays on a stretch of the M6 this morning.
Three lanes are closed off on the southbound carriageway of the motorway due to overrunning roadworks. The lanes are shut off between junction 21 for Woolston and junction 20 for the Lymm Interchange.
National Highways said at 6.40am that drivers are facing delays of more than two hours with traffic queuing for six miles up to the closure.

In a post on X at 6.40am, National Highways said: “The #M6 in #Cheshire southbound between J21A-J21 has lanes 2,3 and 4 (of 4) closed due to roadworks that have over ran their pre-agreed end time of 6am. Lane closures are in the process of being removed.
“There are delays in excess of 120 minutes with 6 miles of congestion.”
A crash has also been reported on the northbound carriageway. Two lanes have been closed off between junctions 20 and 21.
