Manchester United have reportedly contacted Julian Ryerson’s representatives and are said to have the Norway international on their transfer wish list.

Ryerson, 28, is currently representing the national team alongside Manchester City striker Erling Haaland at this summer’s World Cup after a standout season at Borussia Dortmund. The right-back assisted 15 goals across all competitions, more than double the amount he had managed previously in his whole club career.

His domestic team-mate, Felix Nmecha, is another player who United are credited with an interest in. The midfielder impressed in North America before Germany went out in the round of 32.

BILD reports that United have the former City academy graduate as their top target. Newcastle United are also said to have him leading their list of midfielders after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.

As for his Dortmund team-mate Ryerson, his performance in Norway’s round of 16 win over Brazil is said to have not gone unnoticed in the Premier League. Up against Vinicius Junior, he kept out the Real Madrid forward despite barely training in the build-up because of a calf strain.

That is why the full-back came off midway through the second half. As his head coach, Stale Solbakken, said: “It was the calves.

“Fortunately, the injury held, it’s just the strain; he hasn’t trained enough. He’ll look even better in the next game.’

Anthony Gordon is likely to be the next left winger Ryerson faces when Norway take on England in the quarter-finals. He could also face future team-mate Marcus Rashford, depending on how the starting line-ups and substitutions play out.

United are reportedly not alone in closely watching the full-back’s development, with unnamed top international clubs also said to be doing so. BILD describes his combination of mentality, pace and strength in the tackle as the exact profile demanded in the Premier League.

Dortmund understandably want to start contract talks with Ryerson this summer. His contract has less than two years remaining.

As such, Dortmund would reportedly consider any offers over £26million for a player who cost them £4million two-and-a-half years ago. That is significantly less than what United is being quoted for his team-mate Nmecha, who the Athletic claim is valued by Dortmund at £103m.

The German report, meanwhile, suggests that the Bundesliga club are preparing for Ryerson’s potential departure amid interest from English clubs.

They note that a reportedly agreed loan deal for another of their right-backs, Yan Couto, to join Como has yet to become official. Ryerson’s exit could see his out-of-favour team-mate earn a reprieve to replace the Norwegian.
