England health bill: What Tuchel has said on Rice, James and Konsa ahead of Argentina

Several players required careful management, while others continued their rehabilitation from longer-term injuries as England reached the semi-finals of a major tournament for the fourth time since 2018.
The encouraging news for England is that there were no fresh serious injury concerns to emerge from the quarter-final, while the disciplinary picture has also become much clearer.
Speaking after the win over Norway, Tuchel revealed that both Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa experienced physical issues during the match, although he stressed that the former’s withdrawal at half-time was primarily a tactical decision.
“We made life complicated for ourselves, and we had some players struggling with the heat,” Tuchel revealed in his post-match press conference.
“Ezri Konsa was one of them, cramps in his hamstring and with Declan, we made the decision to go more offensive at half-time. It was a bit of an offensive shift.
“I made the decision at 1-0 down and didn’t want to go back on the decision. Even after the equaliser, I thought this was the right signal for the team, to take up higher positions and more connections when Norway defends in a deep block.
“It’s about being closer to your opponents’ box, so we put in Ebs [Eberechi Eze] and Bukayo [Saka] and that meant we had to take Dec or Elliot [Anderson] out.”
Tuchel later explained that Rice’s recent illness also influenced the decision.
“Knowing that Declan struggled after the last three days, he was most of the time in bed, I knew he could not survive the 90 minutes,” Tuchel said.
“I also knew there was the possibility of 120 so I didn’t want to waste another change so I made the decision to take Declan out to avoid another change further on.”

Declan Rice
Rice is expected to be available against Argentina despite concerns surrounding his fitness.
The Arsenal midfielder had missed two training sessions before the Norway match after suffering from a sickness bug, leaving England’s medical staff to carefully manage his workload.
Although substituted at half-time, Tuchel has confirmed the move was designed to protect Rice’s fitness while also allowing England to make an attacking tactical adjustment.
Having recovered sufficiently to start the quarter-final, there is no indication as yet that the previous neural issue affecting his hamstring and lower back would place his semi-final involvement in doubt.

Ezri Konsa
Konsa suffered hamstring cramp during the victory over Norway after battling through the demanding conditions in Miami.
Tuchel described the issue as cramp rather than a muscle injury, suggesting the Aston Villa defender was another victim of the extreme heat rather than a fresh fitness concern.
England will continue to monitor him over the coming days, but as it stands he will be available to face Argentina, but the more pertinent question could be where Tuchel opts to field him in his back line.

Reece James
England received a timely boost as James returned to action against Norway after missing recent matches with a hamstring complaint.
The Chelsea defender had suffered the muscular problem against Ghana, prompting England’s medical staff to carefully manage his recovery given his well-documented history of hamstring and muscle injuries.
James has suffered a catalogue of injuries during his career through recurring muscular setbacks, meaning England have taken an understandably cautious approach throughout the tournament.

But Tuchel described his 49-minute display against Norway as “excellent”, having missed England’s previous three matches.
His return against Norway suggests he is once again available for selection, although Tuchel is still likely to manage his minutes carefully.
Djed Spence
Spence provided another encouraging fitness update during extra time against Norway.
The Tottenham Hotspur defender removed his custom-made protective face mask during the latter stages of the contest after previously wearing the carbon-fibre guard throughout the tournament following a fractured jaw sustained in May.
Whether the mask became uncomfortable in the oppressive conditions or was simply no longer required remains unclear, but Spence completed the match without any obvious discomfort, suggesting his recovery continues to progress well.

Jordan Henderson
Henderson continues his recovery from wrist surgery.
The experienced midfielder participated in England’s pre-match warm-up before the Norway game.
In line with FIFA regulations, all members of Tuchel’s 26-man squad were named among the substitutes, but he was never expected to feature.
His inclusion on the bench reflected his importance in the dressing-room for Tuchel, rather than genuine match readiness.

Bukayo Saka
Saka seemed to put his fitness concerns behind him after making another influential contribution from the bench against Norway. Tuchel – like Mikel Arteta at club level with Arsenal – is, however, still managing his minutes.
With games every three or four days, Saka did not start in Miami but the winger was introduced at half-time as part of Tuchel’s attacking reshuffle, replacing the more conservative midfield setup and the below-par Noni Madueke.
Saka’s direct running and willingness to attack defenders gave England greater width and penetration, helping shift the momentum before Jude Bellingham’s extra-time winner.
Saka showed no signs of the issue that disrupted the latter stages of his domestic season, with England’s medical staff having carefully monitored his workload throughout the tournament.
His 75-minute outing against Norway leaves him well-placed to start or make another decisive impact against Argentina on Wednesday – but will Tuchel opt again to keep Saka up his sleeve for later in the night?
Who is suspended?
England have avoided any fresh suspension concerns ahead of the semi-final.
Rice, Bellingham, Nico O’Reilly and Marc Guehi all entered the quarter-final one booking away from suspension, but none of the four received a yellow card. In fact, the match passed without a single booking being shown to English players.
The quartet are therefore all available to face Argentina.

The disciplinary picture has also reset at exactly the right time. FIFA wipes all accumulated single yellow cards following the quarter-finals, meaning every player begins the semi-finals with a clean disciplinary record.
As a result, no England player can now miss a potential World Cup final through yellow card accumulation. The only way a player could now be suspended for the final would be if they receive a red card against Argentina. The only player unavailable through suspension is Jarell Quansah, who serves the second match of his two-game ban following his red card against Mexico.
Tuchel outlines England recovery plan
Tuchel has also confirmed England will significantly reduce the intensity of training before facing Argentina as recovery becomes the priority during the tournament’s final week.
“They have to, no doubt about it,” the German said. “Our level of training will now go down. The next few days are crucial.
“This victory will help a lot. We have a top facility to recover at the highest level.”
With several players having battled illness, fatigue and the demanding conditions in Miami, the next few days will prove critical to England’s hopes against the reigning world champions.
