Expect Friday lane closure on SR-16 near Tacoma Narrows Bridge

Updated, 8:40 a.m. Friday: The project has been called off for Friday. It will be rescheduled to another date, according to WSDOT.

Original post: Road work could slow down mid-morning travel from Gig Harbor to Tacoma on Friday, according to highway officials.

The right lane of eastbound State Route 16 after the Tacoma Narrows Bridge will close from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 17 while crews repair asphalt and cut brush, the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said in a news release.

The Jackson Avenue exit will remain open, the department added.

WSDOT encouraged drivers to build in extra travel time, drive at posted speeds and travel outside of scheduled work hours. The construction could be rescheduled if it rains.

“The hours are set to not coincide with peak commute hours,” WSDOT spokesperson Cara Mitchell told The News Tribune. The work is limited to the section starting at Jackson Avenue, she added.

“This isn’t any work on the bridge itself,” she said.
