Coronation Street‘s Summer Spellman makes a surprising revelation tonight, amid Betsy Swain’s stroke ordeal. The teenager was rushed to hospital last week after being found unconscious in her home.
Betsy’s family were horrified to learn that the stroke was caused by a blood clot, formed from damage to the artery in her neck. Later, she explained that her boyfriend Dylan Wilson had strangled her during consensual sex, with both unaware of the life-changing consequences.

In tonight’s episode, the reason for Betsy’s hospitalisation begins to spread around the street, leaving her neighbours stunned. In the salon, Maria Connor tells Summer that she had to research the effects of strangulation as she had no idea it could lead to a stroke.
“It’s crazy, like the slightest bit of pressure in the wrong place…” she begins, with Summer replying: “Who knows where the right place is, unless you’re a doctor or a nurse?”
When Maria tells the youngster that she’s sure Summer has “never done it”, the latter scoffs and asks why everyone thinks she’s “the Virgin Mary”. She admits that she has experienced strangulation during sex but assures the hairdresser she “won’t be doing it again” following Betsy’s ordeal.
Summer then asks if Maria has spoken to her son Liam and step-son Jake about the situation, to make them aware of the dangers and consequences. She recognises that it could be “cringe” to discuss with their mum, but claims it’s better coming from her.

Betsy’s storyline was developed to raise awareness about the surprising risks of strangulation during sex, no matter how little pressure is used. The soap has been working closely with the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS), The Stroke Association and Safeline.
“Shining a light on the dangers of this all too common trend, we wanted to chart Betsy and Dylan’s story as they navigate the catastrophic implications of a moment of naivety, and the impact not only on them, but also on their families and the wider community,” said producer Kate Brooks.
“By consulting extensively with IFAS, the Stroke Association and Safeline, we aimed to handle Betsy’s journey with the care and sensitivity it deserves while sparking a difficult and somewhat contentious conversation that helps raise awareness of the risks involved in partaking in such acts.”
Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
