Disney Admits ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ & Live-Action ‘Moana’ Underperformed at Box Office

In their letter to shareholders about Q3 financial results, The Walt Disney Company acknowledged Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and the live-action Moana remake did not meet expectations.

Regarding IP investments, the letter said, “We had a solid quarter creatively,” highlighting the success of Toy Story 5, which surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.

However, The Mandalorian and Grogu only grossed $345.2 million worldwide and Moana (still in theaters) has grossed $263 million.

Disney said, “While audience scores for both Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and fiscal Q4’s live action Moana have been strong, both films underperformed our box office expectations.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu has an 86% audience score and 60% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Moana has an 88% audience score but a 31% critics score.

“Even so,” continued Disney, “these franchise investments contributed to value creation beyond their theatrical releases.”

They referenced the Mandalorian-themed mission for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, adding, “the film drove healthy growth in retail sales for the Star Wars franchise during the quarter.”

“Looking ahead, we expect the live-action Moana to be a strong title on Disney+,” they said, “building on the success of the original film, which is one of the most streamed movies of all time, and extending the reach of the franchise, which now includes three films, a themed area at EPCOT, and a robust global merchandise business.”
