Woman dies after being pinned under TTC bus at Royal York station, police say

A woman is dead after she was pinned under a TTC bus at Royal York station on Monday, Toronto police say.

The collision happened in the bus bay area of the station, located near Royal York Road and Bloor Street W., according to Insp. Errol Watson, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service. Officers were called to the station at about 1:15 p.m.

“Unfortunately, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Watson told reporters at a scrum later on Monday.

Watson said the woman who died was older, but her age was not released. Next of kin is being notified.

He said the police’s traffic service unit is investigating the collision. Police have not yet determined how the collision occurred.

Watson declined to say if the woman was on the bus platform or a sidewalk when struck by the bus.

“As of right now, we are still very early into the investigation and we are continuing to find out exactly what occurred,” he added.

Officers are working with the TTC to review surveillance video of the bus bay area, he added.

Toronto paramedics said a second adult from the scene was taken to hospital with minor injuries, but Watson said the injuries were not as a direct result of the collision. Police are still working on getting the details of those injuries, he said.

TTC ‘heartbroken’ pedestrian has died, CEO says

“We are heartbroken to learn that a pedestrian has died following a collision involving a TTC bus at Royal York Station today. On behalf of everyone at the TTC, I extend our deepest condolences to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Lali said in the statement.

“The safety of our customers, employees, and the public is our highest priority, and we are committed to fully supporting the investigation.”

Trains on Line 2 were bypassing Royal York station as officers investigated but the TTC says service has resumed at the station.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police. Anyone who witnessed the incident and is traumatized by what they saw can contact police to reach their victim services office.
