Parched Upstate NY will get some much-needed rain this week, but then what?
Syracuse, N.Y. — Another round of rain is expected this week in bone-dry Upstate New York, but it will only put a dent in the ongoing drought.
It will be a repeat of two weeks ago, when an inch of rain snuck in between extended dry periods.
An inch of rain is also expected again, on Tuesday and Wednesday. And like last time, the rain will be followed by drought-making dry weather for the foreseeable future, according to National Weather Service forecasts. Upstate New York is expected to remain drier than normal through at least the middle of the month.
Temperatures will cool off, though. The cold front delivering this week’s rain will also bring much colder air than we’ve been used to lately. Record-breaking temperatures in the 80s will yield to the upper 60s, which is typical of early October.
The persistent lack of rain has led to drought warnings and a statewide burn ban.
Rochester is having its driest stretch of late summer/early fall weather in 138 years.
This week’s rain will help ease the drought, but not end it. Some areas are several inches behind on rainfall this year. So far in 2025, Buffalo has had 10 inches less precipitation, which includes melted snow as well as rain, than normal.
Much of the eastern U.S., including Upstate New York, is expected to see below average rainfall through the middle of the month.National Weather Service
